6 Things to look for when buying a weighted blanket

You’ve seen the hype online and now you’re ready to take the plunge and buy your first weighted blanket. But before you bite the bullet and make this amazing investment, there’s some things you should know.

Not all weighted blankets are created equal and if you want to reap the true rewards of this amazing sleep accessory, you need to make sure you’re buying the best quality blanket on the market. Here are our top five tips for what to look for!

  1. Getting the right weight

A general rule of thumb is to choose a blanket roughly 10 percent of your ideal body weight. But, you may need a heavier or lighter version, depending on personal preference. If you’re shopping for a small child, you might want to purchase a blanket that’s on the lighter end and perhaps less than 10% just to make sure they are safe.

  1. Check what’s inside

Plastic pellets are often used inside weighted blankets because they’re cheaper. But they are large, which can make the blanket feel bulky and not as comfortable. Here at Sleep Heavy, we use glass beads. They’re usually the size of grains of sand or smaller, and are heavier than plastic pellets. This makes for a thinner and more comfortable blanket that molds around your body perfectly.

  1. Weight distribution

One of the key elements of a good weighted blanket is making sure the beads inside are distributed correctly. Cheap weighted blankets are often missing this and it means all the weight sinks to one end of the blanket! Our blankets are made with pockets of beads ensuring the weight is even.

  1. Make sure you can wash it

Is there anything worse than spilling a cup of tea on your favourite fluffy blanket? When you’re investing some serious cash into your weighted blanket, you want to know it can be cleaned easily. Our covers are all removable and easy to throw in the wash. It may not seem like a big deal now, but trust us! When you start using your blanket everyday, you’ll want to be able to wash it easily.

  1. Finding your fabric

Are you a cotton customer or a mink maven? Choosing a fabric that suits your lifestyle is important. Our blankets come in two different options - the cotton is great for those who might run hot while they sleep and need something lightweight. The mink on the other hand is incredibly soft and snuggly.

  1. Check the dimensions

There’s nothing more disappointing than buying something online and having it turn up in the mail so much smaller than anticipated. If you’re wanting a blanket to cover your bed, make sure you measure it correctly. And if you’re sharing your blanket in bed with a partner, we’d definitely recommend our King/Queen size - no one wants an argument in the night about stealing the blanket!
